Memorial Day Weekend

Passing the Georgia state line!

While Alex was in WOCS Alex had mentioned he wanted to have a weekend get away to Atlanta, Georgia before he started flight school because once flight school starts, his schedule will most likely be 4:45am-7:00pm, with studying late into the night Monday-Friday. Alex's first official day was Thursday, May 24th, so since he had Friday and Monday off for Memorial Day, we jumped at the chance to take a little vacation and get to spend some quality time together! We had originally planned to go down Friday-Sunday, but on Thursday Alex's Flight class was asked if he would participate in the Atlanta Brave's Memorial Day game holding their large flag along with other representatives from the different branches of service.
Saturday:
It was about a 4.5 hour drive from Fort Rucker to Atlanta, and on the way we were finally able to eat at "The Cracker Barrel," which we were told by many people that you just have to try. We both agree my home cooking is far superior;-)  We arrived at about 3:00, checked into our hotel and walked to Coca Cola World. One perk we're finding out about is the military discounts offered, Alex was able to visit the attractions for free!

The Olympic torches
They had tasting stations where you could try all the different Coca Cola drinks from around the World, my favorite was the red cream soda!

After Coca Cola World, our camera went dead, so from here on out, I only was able to get pictures with my phone:-( For dinner we drove about 15 minutes outside downtown to the 57th Aviation Brigade WW2 bunker that had been restored and turned into a neat little restaurant with award winning beer cheddar soup!  It was dusk, and the weather was cooling down, so we sat on the patio and watched the jets take off (it was right beside a small airport) They also had a cute old time plane that was taking people for rides. What made the night extra special was that we both saw fireflies for the first time! It was so neat!

Outside the restaurant

We finished dinner and desert around dusk, and drove back to our hotel, where the city had come alive. We found that people don't eat dinner at 7:00 like where we're used to, they wait till the weather cools down, around 9:00pm so we decided to walk around the city. We were surprised at how many horse drawn carriages there were driving tourists around!

Sunday:

Alex had the idea on Saturday to purchase tickets to the Aquarium the day before, because there was virtually no line, and at coke we had waited around 45 minutes to get in the doors. I convinced Alex we would be just fine getting them in the morning, well, we got there the next day and lines were wrapped around the building! We waited in line to purchase our tickets, knowing that we would have 2.5 more hours wait until we would be allowed inside the doors. So we purchased our tickets and walked around the block to grab a coffee. We had a great time waiting and talking, grabbed a bite of lunch and got in another waiting line at the Aquarium. This time we only waited about 25 minutes and were finally able to get in!
Georgia Aquarium was jam-packed with children and people (I liked seeing so many babies and children just as much, if not more than all the fish!) It is also the largest Aquarium in the world with 6 exhibits and a dolphin show!

The dolphin show was our favorite part, I was particularly impressed with the actor's voice! He sounded just like Gueston in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" This is the whole show recorded by someone I found on Youtube.

After the Aquarium, we got dressed up and walked to dinner downtown. Ironically, we ate at "Ray's in the City" sushi and seafood that night! It was delicious! Alex had scallops and I had salmon. We had red velvet cake for desert!

Monday- Memorial Day:
We got up bright and early and had breakfast at the Motel. Alex had to wear his uniform (which makes him really uncomfortable in public) We drove just a few minutes and were at the stadium. We were ushered to a special section that had for the families and Alex went to go practice for the actual game along with the other service members. When Alex got back, we had a little time to explore and they also had hotdogs waiting for us!
Turner Stadium

Alex is holding the flag near the top of the stars. Can you see him?!

The whole program was great! Very patriotic and exciting to see! Unfortunately, the Braves lost the game:( However, they had such a touching show it didn't really matter so much to us! During the game, on the scoreboard, a Dad in the Airforce had a message sent to his family, and then after the message was through, he surprised them by coming out onto the field! It was so great to get to see their family reunion! I never get tired of seeing these military family reunions!

Here is another video from youtube I found where I do believe I can actually see Alex's backside!

We left the game a little early because Alex had a PT test bright and early in the morning and we had a long drive home. On our way, we got to experience a Southern storm! It was very windy, we passed two trees that had fallen onto the highway and it poured buckets of rain and a bit of thunder and lightning! I was glad to be in the car. I still turn the heat on when the rain comes, even though it's still hot out when it rains in the South, my mind just doesn't comprehend that hot and rain go together here! (And I know Alex is thankful that in our Jeep, I control my side's temperature and he controls his own!)
Now it's back to reality, and Alex is busy in flight school all day. We are so thankful for the time we got to spend together!

Home Sweet Home!

We have been settled for just about three weeks now and wanted to give you a tour of our house! We were able to get the truck unloaded (with Reynold's help) in one day and completely unpacked by our 3rd day here! Alex worked like crazy one night and painted the bedroom, living room and bathroom our second day at the house. We still have quite a few things that we would like to do/add, but wanted family to see where we're living!  Going from a one room apartment to a 3 bedroom house, we have a whole room that is empty, and still have quite a few "holes" that ideally we would like to fill with furniture, and add a few homey touches, but it feels like home!
Part of the front yard! We need some flowers, a door wreath and an American flag and we'll fit right into the South!

Our ginormous back yard, with a play structure for all the little children that will come to stay at our house;)
Our patio. Everyone in the South has outdoor ceiling fans, kind of neat!

Living room to the left
Dining area to the right
I love the green wall Alex painted:) Next, we need to put up curtains!

Kitchen, needs a lot of work! Exctied to make it cheery since that is where I spend a lot of my time!
Pantry to the side of the kitchen- I love a stocked pantry!
Guest/hallway Bathroom- Didn't Alex do a great job painting?!
Master bedroom
Master bathroom
The spare, bare soon to be guest room.
Alex's office, we found this pull out bed/couch on craigslist, brand new with the tags on it for jsut 100.00! We were pretty excited:)
That's it! You've just toured the whole house! Not too bad for just having moved 3 weeks ago, right? I'll have to update more once we get curtains, rugs and a few other final touches added, but for now it's home sweet home!

I made BBQ chicken pizza the other night that turned out "real nice." Thought you would enjoy it too! It's a nice variation of pizza if you're tired of the same plain old pepperoni. I made it with crock pot BBQ chicken, so it was extra easy and delicious!

BBQ ChickenPizza
Ingredients:
2 whole chicken breasts
3 cups of BBQ sauce
1 cup mozarella cheese
1/2 cup cheddar cheese
1 pizza crust (I used Pillsbury)
1 green bell pepper, sliced
1/2 red onion, sliced
2 green onions

Place 2 whole chicken breasts in the crockpot and cover with your choice of BBQ sauce (I used sweet baby rays) Place heat on high for 3 hours. With fork, shrd chicken and add more sauce if needed. Place on low for another 1-2 hours.
Preheat oven to 400. Bake pizza crust until slightly golden brown. Spread BBQ chicken over crust. Layer with cheeses, then green peppers and red and green onion. Return to oven when cheeses are melted and bubbly. Enjoy!

From Oregon to Alabama!

With all of our belongings packed away in the moving truck, we began our trek from our home state, Oregon to our new home in Alabama! Although we knew it would be a long drive, we were both so looking forward to the time spent with eachother! We calculated that since being married in July, we had been together 110 days, and spent 157 days apart. The 157 days apart where the only communication we had was via letters about 95% of the time. Only towards the end of WOCS was Alex allowed a half hour call Wednesdays and Sundays. We were also looking forward to seeing parts of the beautiful country together!

Day 1:
Sunday, May 6th
We began our journey early in the morning on Sunday. We traveled from Colton, OR to Ogden, Utah a total of 748 miles. Approximately 12.5 hours travel time. Our moving truck was only able to go a maximum of 32 mph up the steep hills, so it probably took us a little longer than if we had been driving our Jeep across country;)
Beautiful Oregon!

Leaving Oregon, but we'll be back!

Entering Idaho (blurry, but I improved by the end of the trip as you'll see!)

We arrived in Utah late in the evening Sunday.(But didn't I do a good job at catching the sign?!)

Day 2:
Monday, May 7
From Ogden, Utah to Denver, Colorado. A total of 525 miles. Colorado is one of my favorite States and Alex had never been before, so we decided to make it a date night! This was the only meal we didn't eat fast food, we didn't pack many "going out" clothes, so we chose a more casual and fun little Mexican restaurant. Alex loved Denver (maybe almost as much as me... maybe;)  It was great to get out and about in the city! Can't wait to go back already!

Yay!

Arriving in Denver! This was the only time during our trip that we experienced rain, it was all sunny skies the next morning when we woke up!

Day 3:
Tuesday, May 8
From Denver, Colorado to Shawnee, Oklahoma. 706 miles, a little over 11 hours travel time.
Ready to start another day on the road!

You'rte probably wondering if Alex drove the whole way, and he did! Minus about 25 minutes! He is an excellent driver, and it made me too nervous to drive such a huge truck!

Kind of far away, but we're in Kansas!

O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A! Oklahoma!!!

Day 4:
Wednesday, May 9 (to early morning Thursday, May 10)
Shawnee, Oklahoma to Enterprise, Alabama!!! We made our last day the longest yet! We were anxious to finally be off the road so Alex drove through the night. I also stayed up with him,and vowed to never nap so he would always have company. On the second day I closed my eyes for about 15 minutes, woke up and said "woops" but it never happened again! We stayed outside Fort Rucker's gates because our housing appointment was the next morning at 10:00am.
Last Day on the road! Woohoo!

Arkansas- worst traffic ever! I felt like it would have been much safer to just wear helmets and bullet proof vests around this State! Yikes!

Alex's friend friend from WOCS, Dave Reynolds who is from California, met up with us around Tennessee and we ate dinner at Pizza Hut that night.

Getting Closer!!

It was too dark outside to get a State sign pic of Alabama, it was around 2:00am when we arrived at our destination! We made it!
The next day we went to our housing appointment ans began moving into our new home at Fort Rucker and our road trip officially ended. We had intended to bring along a book on tape, however, the noisy truck prevented us from being able to listen to too much so even if we had brought along a CD of any type, the chances of us being able to actually hear were very slim. We were just so happy to get to be together again!
I sat in the middle seat right next to Alex the whole trip! I did get grumpy once when trying to call to set up internet for our new house. I was on the phone for more than a half hour with a man from India, who was trying to sell me a million different products (I am sure you have all experienced that phone call) what made things worse was that I already couldn't hear very well in the noisy truck, and trying to write any sort of readable confirmation number down while driving down the bumpy roads was near impossible. We didn't stop to see any tourist attractions, I did want to stop at Christmas Land (what could be more wonderful than Christmas 24/7 7 days a week?! But Alex wasn't as enthusiastic about it as I was) All in all it was a great trip and time together for us!

Our new home! 33 Urell Street
                          Fort Rucker, AL

We had taco night a couple weeks back and I wanted to make home made salsa. I got this recipe off of pinterest and it was a success! Everyone really liked it! My advice is that you wear plastic gloves when chopping the jalapenos! I rubbed my eyes shortly after I made this and it BURNSSSSS!!! I was in the shower and Alex had to pour me a glass of milk so I could rinse my eyes out, (it relieved the burn after a few minutes) Here is the link for the recipe. I halved the recipe and it still made a lot.
